Memphis got just its second win in six games thanks to a starting group that made 21 of the team’s season-high 23 3-pointers. Desmond Bane scored 24 points and had 13 assists, and Ja Morant scored 21 points.
The Grizzlies pulled away from the Lakers, who lost their fourth straight game, and Ziaire Williams scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.
The Lakers have lost 10 of their last 13 games since winning the first In-Season event. LeBron James scored 32 points and Anthony Davis scored 31.
In the past year, Los Angeles had won six straight home games against the Grizzlies. This included three straight wins when the Lakers upset the second-seeded Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs last spring.
Even though Austin Reaves scored 19 points and had 12 assists, the Lakers lost their first game of a 12-game stretch that didn’t take place in Los Angeles. They are now 0-2 on the road.
Lakers players D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura both missed the game because of injuries. Russell missed his third straight game with a bruised tailbone, and Hachimura missed his second in a row with a strained left calf.
Memphis won the first of three games on their trip, despite turning the ball over 19 times. They took control of the game in the last few minutes, going on a 24–10 run that began with Jackson’s fifth 3-pointer with 7:28 left.
Jenkins, the coach of Memphis, got a technical foul in the third quarter for coming onto the court during play to fight about a call that wasn’t made during a loose ball scramble between Jackson and James.
Jenkins got in the way of Taurean Prince, who was leading the Lakers’ fast break the other way and then fought hard to get past his coaches as they tried to keep him from the officials, but Jenkins wasn’t thrown out.
Before the game, Lakers coach Darvin Ham said that he is still in touch with owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka, even though the team has been having a rough patch lately. After taking the Lakers to the Western Conference playoffs last year, Ham is in his second year as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He knows that his high-profile job comes with reports of firing whenever the Lakers have a bad season.
Fans don’t like how Ham switches players around and divides up playing time during the losing streak. For example, they don’t like how he tried to start with only defensemen around James and Davis, but it didn’t work.
Ham said, “I don’t mind if people criticize the work I’m doing.” “I am going to keep my head down and do my job until I can’t do it any longer.”
James made all four of his 3-point shots in the first quarter and scored 14 points. Before halftime, the Grizzlies made nine 3-pointers, including five from Smart. Smart had missed 16 straight 3-point shots in the previous five games before making his second attempt against the Lakers.
Vince Williams Jr. of Memphis missed his second straight game because his left foot hurt.
