In honor of Kobe Bryant, who passed away on Sunday in a helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of his daughter Gianna and seven other people, LeBron James is granting his fans a closer look at his body ink memorial.
The 35-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star posted a close-up of his recently inked tattoo on Instagram on Friday along with a vintage image of him and Bryant, 41, seated courtside.
He wrote, “My brother ♯ #Mamba4Life #RIPKobe #RIPGiGi,” as the picture’s caption.
As can be seen in the photo, James recently got a new tattoo of the late athlete’s jersey numbers, 8 and 24, along with a snake, alluding to Bryant’s moniker, “Black Mamba.” Two roses and the phrase “Mamba 4 Life” are also inked beneath the black serpent in the design.
James initially made the announcement of his homage tattoo in a Wednesday Instagram Story post, when he disclosed that artist Vanessa Aurelia was now working on an inking of a design on his left leg.
The Lakers player Anthony Davis also posted a video of himself getting inked, though he hasn’t disclosed the specifics of the tattoo yet.
“I appreciate you letting me do this piece for you, @kingjames!” On Friday, Aurelia posted via an Instagram post. “It was truly an honor, and working with you is the best,” I said. #mambamentality #mamba4life #lakers #RIP #making my job simple.”
“@kobebryant you are missed loved and cherished through many,” she continued.
In fog on a hill in Calabasas, California, Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were headed to a youth basketball tournament with parents and players from the Mamba Sports Academy girls’ team when their chopper crashed. Along with Christina Mauser, pilot Ara Zobayan, Sarah and Payton Chester, John Altobelli, his wife Keri Altobelli, and their daughter Alyssa Altobelli, the two also passed away.
Although I’m not ready, I’m going. Bryant, who won five championships in 20 seasons with the Lakers, said, “Man, I’m sitting here trying to write something for this post, but every time I try I start crying again just thinking about you, niece Gigi, and the friendship/bond/brotherhood we had.”
He went on, “It’s my job to put this s— on my back and keep it going!” “Please keep an eye on me and grant me strength from the heavens above!” Here, I have the US! I want to say so much more, but I just can’t since I’m at a loss for words at the moment! Until our next meeting, dear brother!
The three-time NBA champion posted a video of himself introducing himself to Bryant and Gianna during a recent Staples Center game the next day.
“My sibling! “I love you, man!” he added as the video’s caption.
James and the legendary Lakers player had a unique moment the night before Bryant passed away.
James passed the basketball icon for third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring record during the Lakers vs. Philadelphia 76ers game on January 25. James was wearing customized sneakers for the performance honoring Bryant.
Later, Bryant sent James a message on Instagram congratulating him on reaching the milestone, saying, “On to #2 @kingjames!” Continue expanding the game and laying out the blueprint for the next.
