The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 134–110 on Sunday night to get back to 500. D’Angelo Russell scored 34 points and LeBron James added 28.
The Lakers (22-22) got back on track after losing by 18 points to Brooklyn the night before. Austin Reaves scored 15 points and Anthony Davis had 14 points and 14 boards.
James and Russell scored 19 of the Lakers’ first 20 points in the fourth.
Russell brags on one of the 35 fastbreak points the Lakers scored, which was the most this season. He tried to fake a pass behind James’ back while he was running next to him, but James caught the ball and made the layin.
“That was dope,” James said, shaking his head. “The only way to get fastbreak points is to defend and not foul, which is what we did.”
Russ and James made four free throws and dunked to give their team a 23-point lead. Russell came back into the starting group five games ago, determined to be aggressive to go with James and Davis.
“He’s been tough to find his shot, and we’ll keep looking for him, especially in transition,” James said.
Since they already had the win, James sat out the last six minutes of the game with Davis and the other players.
Portland was led by Malcolm Brogdon, who scored 23 points and had nine assists. The next-to-last team in the West lost its two-game winning run. Anfernee Simons scored 19 points and Jerami Grant scored 17.
“The Trail Blazers have a record, but they still have a lot of firepower,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said.
Russell scored 13 points in the third quarter, mostly from three 3-point shots, as the Lakers’ lead grew from 13 to 22 points. In the fourth, he hit two more threes, tying his season-high of six.
Russell had eight passes and scored 35 points, which was one point less than his season-high.
Ham said, “He’s got his mind on his game and how he can help the team.” “He played one of the best games I’ve seen him play since he came back to the Laker team tonight.”
