Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers played the Los Angeles Clippers. D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Davis both had big scoring nights for the Lakers. That said, Austin Reaves had trouble getting things going because he was having trouble from the field and especially from three-point range.
Reaves only made 5 of 14 shots from the field and 2 of 8 from deep, scoring 12 points in the Lakers’ loss to their foes. There were less than eight minutes left in the game, and the Lakers were only down two points. They would turn to Reaves to help them win.
But Reaves didn’t have a good night. The guard thinks that the final score might have been different if he had been able to make the open shots he got.
“I think just to touch on what DLo said about getting open looks, I got a lot of them tonight, I just didn’t take advantage of them,” Reaves said after the 11-point loss. “I’ve said it before: the league is a game of offense.” In 2015, the Golden State Warriors had the best offensive in the NBA. This year, I think they will be in the middle of the pack.
DLo said, “If we—I—make open shots, the outcome could be different. The game is moving in that direction, so you can take some positives from that.”
With Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and James Harden leading the way for the Clippers and LeBron James sitting out, the Lakers couldn’t miss any of the chances they had, especially in a game against the Clippers. If Reaves doesn’t come through in those situations, it will hurt him a lot.
People like Leonard and Harden also attacked Reaves on defense, but he held his own and made them take hard shots, which they made but missed. But Reaves only tipped his hat to them for making good shots.
“You just try to beat them,” Reaves said. “What great players! They’ve been in the league for a long time and made a lot of money.” Though I will never back down from the challenge of competing and getting stops, that’s what they do. When they make goals like that, you give them credit and try to score on the other end.
This season, Reaves has had good and bad games, but he has shown that he can deliver most of the time when the stakes are high. If the Lakers guard gets the chance again, he will definitely be ready to make up for what he did.
