Any lingering euphoria following Luka Doncic’s historic scoring outburst on Friday was promptly and inconsequentially extinguished on Saturday at American Airlines Center.
Doncic, who was initially deemed questionable due to an ankle injury earlier in the day, participated in the Mavericks’ 120-115 loss to the Sacramento Kings but was unable to make a significant contribution.
After trailing by as many as 23 points in the second half, the Mavs rallied to within six points. However, with less than a minute remaining, De’Aaron Fox, who recorded a game-high 34 points, drove the lane for a layup to seal the victory for the Kings. To propel the Dallas revival, Grant Williams recorded a career-high 27 points, including 7 of 10 from the 3-point arc. That numbered among the Mavs’ few positive developments.
Doncic accumulated 10 rebounds, 17 assists, and 28 points in order to amass his ninth triple-double of the season. In the first half, he also received his tenth technical charge of the season for expressing his disappointment with the lack of call on a blocked shot in the paint. It was among the Mavs’ four technicals that day. Both Tim Hardaway Jr. and the Mavs bench were issued technicals. The bench technical occurred when the Kings (26-18) were up 11-0 and dominating by 22 points in the third quarter, in response to a second delay of game warning.
Once more, Doncic and the Mavs (25-21) were operating with a limited bench.
Kyrie Irving missed three consecutive games due to a sprained right wrist. Dante Exum suffered a right knee abrasion, Derrick Jones Jr. missed his second game of the season due to a sprained left wrist, and Dwight Powell was sidelined with a corneal abrasion of the left eye.
On Friday, in a five-point victory at Atlanta, Doncic recorded a career-high 73 points on 25 of 33 shooting. He was 8 of 13 from the 3-point line and 15 of 16 from the free-throw line. Only two games separate it from the fourth-highest number of points tallied in an NBA contest, which is tied with Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game and Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 and 78 points.
On Saturday, he completed 9 of 26 from the field, with 1 for 9 on three-point attempts, missing his first eight at-empty attempts.
Fox guided the Kings to a 19-point halftime lead; he completed 13 of 24 from the field.
With the Mavs trailing by 14, Doncic, who ranks fourth in the league with 37.1 minutes per game, finished the first half with 14 points on 5 of 14 shooting, including 0 for 5 from the 3-point arc.
