The Lakers played their first of six road games this season on Saturday night. Their game was against the Golden State Warriors, who play in the same league.
They had not played since the playoffs last year, so these were their first games against each other since then. Both teams had to win because their scores were so bad. The Lakers won in the end, coming back from behind to win 145–144 in double overtime.
The Warriors began with just a few players, with Draymond Green in the middle. Anthony Davis showed right away that he was strong with a putback dunk and then a block.
LeBron James was also on fire. He scored seven points right away to put the Lakers ahead. Stephen Curry came back right away with a 3-pointer, though, as he has done many times before.
After that, Curry started to shoot because the Lakers were not covering him. He made two more shots without any problems. The Laker bench, led by Jarred Vanderbilt and Rui Hachimura, finished the quarter very well and took the lead 33–30. He then took a break.
At the start of the second, Vanderbilt was all over the court. D’Angelo Russell found him and dunked the ball, which made the Warriors call a timeout.
Brandin Podziemski, a young Warriors player, did a great job early on by making a three-pointer during a timeout to keep his team in the game. He then came back in and made another three, which put him ahead again.
In the second quarter, Christian Wood played well for the Lakers. He built some tough goals. Jonathan Kuminga was another player for Golden State who was like that. He spun and dunk the ball in transition to end his run. Everyone at the Chase Center was excited about his and Andrew Wiggins’ cheap threes.
In general, it was a fun half. James scored seven straight points to end the game. One of them beat the buzzer to give his team a 68-63 lead that they took into halftime.
The Warriors scored 10 straight points in the third quarter to force the Lakers to take a break. After the break, Golden State kept the heat on. They were ahead by ten points, so Darvin Ham had to call another break.
To get his team going again when they were down 15, Ham went to Vanderbilt to check on Taurean Prince.
But after that, Davis fell badly when he was hit in the leg on a drive to the basket. He went back to the locker room after making two free throws.
Still, James and Vanderbilt led the Lakers on a run that tied the game. On the other hand, the Warriors played well in the last few minutes of the third quarter and went ahead 99–91.
Davis was finally able to come back early in the fourth quarter after having hip cramps. He made a jump shot right away. After Davis made a three-point play, the Lakers kept coming back and were only two points behind.
Curry was quiet for most of the night, but late in the game he came on strong and made some big shots for his team. For L.A., Russell did the same thing. He got fire and gave his team a small lead in the early going.
That was the last play of the game. Davis got a big offensive rebound and made two free throws to put the Lakers ahead by three points. He then stopped Curry from making a 3-point shot. However, Curry did make a layup that tied the game at one.
After that, the Warriors had to foul Davis, which they did. Davis only made one of two shots. Curry then made a layup that tied the game and made it go to extra time.
Davis set up James for a layup at the start of overtime, but Draymond Green scored next. That pretty much summed up both teams’ baskets that kept the game close.
After Curry made a key three-pointer from the corner, Reaves made a big layup that put the Lakers ahead by four points. And then he missed a long shot. Russell then made two free throws to put the Lakers ahead by three points.
Steve Kerr thought of a good play to let Klay Thompson shoot during the break. Thompson did that, and with 5.9 seconds left, the game was tied. James missed a shot after the game ended, which led to a second overtime.
Howard and James scored the first seven points of overtime, giving the Lakers a five-point lead. The Warriors also fought back to stay in the game. Curry made some big shots that helped his team get back ahead.
Russell made some big shots late in the game to put the Lakers ahead after they made a few mistakes that cost them.
As time ran out, Curry made another big shot, this time a 3-pointer, which put the Warriors ahead 144–143. When James got the ball one last time, he drove to the basket and got a foul along the way. He made the first two shots but then missed a shot from halfcourt that would have won it for the Lakers.
James had 36 points, 20 rebounds, and 12 assists. The game was decided by his free throws, which he made.
