There are a lot of players ahead of Luka Dončić in the league this season. He has the most points, assists, triple-doubles, usage rate, and 3-point tries and makes per game.
But he is also one of the NBA’s top players in another important area. This area is important for both league income and, perhaps more importantly, the ongoing debate. The NBA said on its social media pages on Tuesday that Dončić is sixth in the NBA in shirt sales after half of the 2023–24 season.
For no reason, this makes us wonder: do you think Dončić will do better or worse in the shirt sales race at the end of the year than he will in the MVP voting?
Steph Curry is still Steph Curry, both on the court and in the NBA Shop. The Golden State Warriors’ guard is first in the world in jersey sales so far this year, followed by Jayson Tatum, LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, a rookie star, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, the top scorers for the Phoenix Suns, both had 7-8 records. Dončić ended just ahead of them. Damian Lillard had 10, Ja Morant had 11, Nikola Jokic had 14, and De’Aaron Fox had 15.
At the moment, Dončić scores 34.7 points per game, which is second in the NBA. Only Joel Embiid scores 35.3 points per game more. Only Tyrese Haliburton (12.5) and Trae Young (10.9) have more assists per game than him (9.6). He has also had nine triple-doubles this season, three more than Jokic (14) and thirteen more than Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis 12. With 35.9 units used per game, he is second only to Embiid. While Curry makes 11.6, he makes 10.3 3-pointers per game, putting him in second place. Curry also makes just under four 3-pointers per game, putting him in first place.
Plus, Dončić is one of the guys whose jerseys sell the most around the world. They are Wembanyama from Le Chesnay, France, and Antetokounmpo from Athens. They are also ahead of Dončić in the race to sell the most NBA jerseys this year.
Dončić scored 73 points in last week’s 148-143 win over Atlanta, which was both a Mavericks club record and the NBA’s high for a single game this season. Does not that look like a time when his shirt sales would go through the roof?
In the second part of last season, Dončić had the fifth most jersey sales in the NBA. However, this season, Wemby swept in with all the attention in the West and took the top spot.
Not only that, but Kyrie Irving’s shirt sales were among the best in the NBA in the second half of last year, too. This was after the huge trade deadline with the Brooklyn Nets that brought Irving to Dallas. Welp. This season, Irving has missed 21 of the Mavericks’ 48 games because of injuries. His shirt sales have also dropped out of the top 15 in the NBA. It was a real Biff Loman moment.
The NBA’s press statement on the mid-season jersey sales rankings also said that the Mavericks just made it into the top 10 in the league for team merchandise sold. The top 10 teams in terms of team merchandise sales were the Lakers, the Celtics, and the Warriors. Phoenix, New York, San Antonio, and Dallas made up the rest of the list.
How do you feel? Is sixth place for Dončić and tenth place for the Mavericks as a team about right? There are two ways to vote in this case: in the comments or with your money.
