‘PSYCHIC’: Nikola Jokic admits capitalized on a gamble by Austin Reaves with a dazzling pass that wowed NBA fans in Nuggets vs Lakers game

On a night that included a boring trade deadline and the unveiling of a Kobe Bryant statue, the Lakers still had a game to play against the Nuggets.

During the game, Denver had a 15-point lead at one point. With just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, however, the Lakers managed to tie the game, 104-104. But sadly for Los Angeles, there’s only so much you can do to contain Nikola Jokic’s speed.

Anthony Davis guarded the MVP of the most recent NBA Finals close to the top of the key. But in an attempt to send a double team and try to steal the ball, Austin Reaves left the perimeter, leaving Michael Porter Jr. wide open on the left wing.

Jokic, who had his back to the basket, fully pivoted his body when he saw Reaves sprint toward him. But the big man may have the fastest hands in the league, as we learned in a recent profile in the New Yorker, and the gamble by Reaves didn’t work out.

The big man quickly delivered a perfect pass to Porter, who was able to hit the uncontested catch-and-shoot 3-pointer with just over one minute left on the clock

This also sealed an 8-0 run for Denver, which gave the Nuggets a big enough lead to close out the game.

It was a risky play by Reaves that did not pay off, as Jokic’s court awareness allows very little room for gambles like this. The play has been going viral on social media, because fans are wondering how Jokic knew Reaves was sneaking up behind him.

While Porter was trying to alert Jokic of Reaves doubling, Jokic told reporters after the game he didn’t hear his teammate, and just sensed the double. Expanding on this, Jokic said, “I just felt something behind me, and I just basically threw a pass to Mike. It seems like a good play, but it just happened.”

Never too impressed with himself, Jokic did not make much of his spectacular play, calling it “just a pass” despite his teammates all crediting him for the incredible awareness.

Plays like this are what make Jokic so special. While he can score at will in the post, he can also pick apart double teams and find the open man every single time. This separates him from other stars in the league, and it also separates the Nuggets from many other contenders.
