The Golden State Warriors defeated the Utah Jazz 129-107 on Monday night sans head coach Steve Kerr thanks to 26 points from Klay Thompson and 25 from Stephen Curry, who nailed five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Kerr was in Serbia for the funeral of Golden State assistant coach Dejan Milojevic, who passed away the following day after suffering a heart attack during a team meal in Salt Lake City on January 16. Among the mourners were Kerr, club vice president Rick Celebrini, general manager Mike Dunleavy, assistant coaches Chris DeMarco and Ron Adams, and team liaison Zaza Pachulia.
The Warriors (26-25) won their fifth straight game on Monday under the direction of assistant coach Kenny Atkinson, lifting them past the.500 mark.
Curry’s 33-foot field goal ended a 14-5 run, putting the score at 114-96.
Thompson had his highest point total since he had thirty against Chicago on January 12. For the Warriors, Andrew Wiggins contributed 17 points, and Jonathan Kuminga scored 14 points, marking his 31st consecutive game in double digits.
Only two of Jordan Clarkson’s 22 points came from the second half. For Utah, Collin Sexton scored 22 as well, and Lauri Markkanen added 19.
In the first quarter, the Warriors made seven 3-pointers, including a pull-up three from Curry that put them ahead 28–17.
Utah pulled ahead with seven straight points, but Draymond Green’s 41-foot heave right before the buzzer gave the Warriors a 63-55 edge at the break.
After the Jazz dealt away key players Simone Fontecchio, Kelly Olynyk, and Ochai Agbaji last week, mostly for draft picks, their new starting lineup proved ineffectual.
