The big man made sure that the Los Angeles Lakers won their last two games before the All-Star break, which Anthony Davis said was very important.
LeBron James missed the game because he had to play two games in a row. Davis led the way with 37 points and 15 boards, and the Lakers beat the Jazz by 16 points.
After seven games, the Lakers have won six of them. They are now four games above 500 going into the break. But what’s more important is that the Lakers finally look like a team that can play good basketball together.
Davis thinks that the Lakers are finally starting to show that they are a fast-paced team that attacks the basket and plays tough defense. Through Spectrum SportsNet, he wants to make sure they keep playing this way when they come back from break:
“Yeah. Not what we could be, but who we are. It’s just a game, and we need to have a name. That’s becoming clearer; we’re going to be a fast-paced team. The team likes to get into the paint and get to the line, but they are also tough on defense. So we’re giving what we have to be a name as we move forward. After the All-Star break, we can’t be like, “Okay, what kind of team are we?” Or do we have to be this way and that? This is what we are. We need to keep playing the way we have been for the past two, three, or four weeks so that we can keep our character after the All-Star break.
The Lakers looked like a much stronger team, even in their only loss this stretch, to the Denver Nuggets. This is a good sign for the future. Davis knew the Lakers could have eased out of this game against the Jazz because they had plenty of reasons not to, but he’s glad they didn’t:
“It’s not an excuse when it comes to the Lakers. Not a single person cares if it’s a good reason. So, for us, going in and making sure we’re focused on getting this win because this team is right below us in the points and we want to move up. And it’s one of those trick games right before All-Star, and since you’re on the road and arrived late, you can easily fold and think, “Okay, whatever. We won four out of six.” And just keep going until you get to All-Star. Coach Ham said it best: “This is a good ‘quality of life’ win.”
The Lakers can now take a break and get ready for the home stretch. They have gained some good momentum and hope to keep it up when the games start up again next week. And with Davis playing this well, they can definitely keep going in this direction.
