The Warriors defeated the Wizards 123–112 at Capital One Arena, thanks in large part to 25 points from new sixth man Klay Thompson and reliable point-guard performance from Chris Paul, who made his rotational debut for the first time since January 5.

Jonathan Kuminga added 21 points to Curry’s 18 points on 6-of-21 shooting for the Warriors, who did not score in the first half.

Following his bench stint, Gary Payton II led Golden State with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

Paul, a reserve who missed 21 games due to a fractured left hand, will be joining Payton. Head coach Steve Kerr expressed confidence in a second unit that he currently anchors alongside Thompson prior to Paul’s return.

Leading the charge with two triples and setting the tone for a dynamic, well-rounded offence, he collaborated with Thompson, Moses Moody, Dario Saric, and Trayce Jackson-Davis to turn a 25-23 deficit into a 43-39 advantage at the beginning of the second quarter.

Since November 23, 2012, Curry had not been held without a point in the first half of a regular-season game. However, the Warriors (30-27) would use their second unit to help them extend their lead to 60-58 at the half.

As Thompson converted four 3-pointers and Paul kept up the offensive tempo, finding cutters and shooters, Washington (9-49) withered under a well-organized defensive effort. Paul played the whole twenty-two minutes and finished with nine points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Thursday is the second of Golden State’s four games away from home against the New York Knicks. There are games on Friday and Sunday against the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors, respectively.
