Anthony Davis scored the last basket for the Lakers in OT, and they beat the Washington Wizards 134–131 on Thursday night. The Wizards have now lost 13 straight games.
To help the Lakers beat a tough team, LeBron James scored 31 points and made a key 3-pointer in OT. But they never got ahead. They had won nine times in 12 games. James only needs nine more points to score 40,000 in the NBA. He will be the first player in history to do so.
Jordan Poole scored 34 points for the Wizards, which is the most for the season. Marvin Bagley III scored 23 points, which is also the most for the season. The Wizards played well against the Lakers, but they still need to win three games before they have the worst losing streak in the team’s history. Washington missed five straight shots in overtime and lost the ball twice, so they couldn’t score in the last 3:50.
Kyle Kuzma, a forward who used to play for the Lakers, scored 20 points but missed a 3-point shot that would have tied the game with eight seconds left in overtime. Corey Kispert also scored 20 points for Washington.
In the fourth quarter, the Wizards were down eight points, but they came back to win. For most of the first three quarters, they were ahead. The last three points of the game were made by Poole before OT. They gave Washington a 126-124 lead. And Austin Reaves tied it for LA with a shot that went off the screen.
With less than a second left in the game, Poole missed a 31-footer.
James scored 19 points in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ amazing comeback win over the Clippers the night before his game against Washington. Because his hip hurt all the time, he missed two games around the All-Star break.
James, who is 39 years old, will almost certainly score 40,000 points this Saturday on national TV against the defending champions Denver.
D’Angelo Russell scored 22 points for the Lakers.
First-year Wizards player Bilal Coulibaly missed his second straight game because his right hip was hurt. While Avdija missed three games because of a broken left heel, he came back strong.
Cam Reddish didn’t play for the Lakers in the second half. In the first half, he only played for four minutes. He didn’t come back until Wednesday; he had been hurt his ankle and off for five weeks.
