The Los Angeles Lakers’ chances of making the playoffs took another hit on Saturday when they lost to Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets 124–114 at the Crypto.com Arena. They had won their last two games, but this loss stopped that streak. They also lost their eighth straight game against the Nuggets. Today was their third loss to Denver this season. The defending champs now have a season series win over LA.
And even though the win made things worse, the Lakers did have a moment to be happy. LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 regular season points, adding another feather to his cap. As usual, the senior forward called an iso and pushed his way to the basket, where he banked his shot off the backboard. Anthony Davis, who plays for James, was asked about the four-time MVP’s amazing accomplishment during the press conference after the game. He came back with a clever joke:
“You know, I just told him in the locker room that he might want to stop breaking records because every time he does, we lose.” The same thing he said.
Davis’ joke was about the night James beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a legend for the Lakers, to become the NBA’s all-time top scorer. It took almost 34 years since the last regular season game for the veteran forward, but he made a great fadeaway shot to become the first player to score more points than the Hall of Famer.
However, the Lakers lost 133–130 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, even though James scored 38 points. This is the second year in a row that the Lakers star’s memorable night has been ruined by his team’s poor play. James is definitely very happy about what he has done. That being said, he would have liked it more if his team had beaten the Nuggets and ended their losing streak against the defending champs.
After the game, he talked about how upset he was that the Lakers were behind in a game that was very important for their playoff chances. Davis was definitely mad at himself too for how he played. He scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and passed the ball twice in a game that the Lakers lost by three points. If Davis had done a little better, James’ historic night wouldn’t have been ruined by a loss.
The same thing can be said about how Davis played against the Nuggets. He only scored 17 points, grabbed 11 boards, and passed the ball twice. He was supposed to slow down Nikola Jokic, but he did a terrible job. James scored more than 40,000 points, but his team lost by 10 points, even though he had scored 35 points, 10 boards, and 7 assists. He was named MVP twice and is currently the MVP of the Finals.
He wouldn’t have had to joke that James should stop setting records if Davis had stepped up either night. This four-time MVP will keep setting new records. Davis needs to get his act together and play better so that his great nights don’t end in losses.
