The big man, who is 28 years old, has been out for more than a month because of swelling in his left knee during the All-Star break. He will now have an arthroscopic surgery.
Just before Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks, Coach Darvin Ham said that more information about hurt big man Christian Wood would be coming “pretty soon.”
It doesn’t look like the public update will be good.
A source told the Southern California News Group on Monday night that Wood is going to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin of ESPN were the first to report that Woods was going to have surgery. They also said that Woods would be out for “several weeks” after the treatment.
The Lakers play the Pelicans in New Orleans on April 14 to end the regular season.
Following the All-Star break, Wood has not played due to what the team has publicly termed as “left knee effusion” (swelling).
That’s 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, or 17.4 minutes per game, for 50 games this season.
As a free agent in September, Wood signed a $5.75 million, two-year deal with the Lakers. There is a $3.06 million player option for the second season of the deal, which runs from 2024–25.
Wood is one of many Lakers who have missed a lot of games this season.
Gabe Vincent, a guard who was one of the Lakers’ most important free agents last summer, has missed all but five games because of problems with his left knee. On December 27, he had surgery.
Moving Forward Jarred Vanderbilt, a key defense player, missed the first 20 games of the season because of inflammation in his left heel. He then played in about 20 games before spraining his right midfoot in early February.
