Draymond Green clock-out early in a pivotal game against the Orlando Magic.
Green was assessed a technical foul just 3:36 into the first quarter for arguing with referee Ray Acosta regarding a play in which Steph Curry was flagged for a foul on Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic. When Steve Kerr sensed danger, he called a timeout, and a number of Warriors players as well as security guards emerged to block Green and Acosta.
It was unsuccessful. Before the timeout ended, Green had been ejected for the fourth time this season and received his second technical foul. He had been ranting at the official for some time. It’s his 22nd career ejection, second only to NBA technical foul guru and former Draymond Green coach Rasheed Wallace in history.
It’s incredible that this isn’t even Green’s first ejection of the season. That occurred at 1:43 of their matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves when Green grabbed Rudy Gobert by the neck and pulled him down the court. It was 0-0.
After that play, he was suspended for five games. Green was also ejected from a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers for pushing Donovan Mitchell. He also received an indefinite suspension for hitting Jusuf Nurkic, which ultimately resulted in him losing 12 games.
Green has now missed a total of 26 games, been tossed out of two games early in the third quarter and expelled from two others early in the first quarter. That’s practically 29 whole games, and there may be more if the NBA determines that his most recent infraction warrants additional punishment.
Steph Curry appeared moved to tears as she witnessed Green be sent off for the second time.
Without Jonathan Kuminga, the Warriors were already operating with a small roster. This was a mistimed dismissal for the Warriors, who were urgently attempting to stay up with the Houston Rockets. Steph would cry, and no one would blame her. Well, unless Curry was on the other team, then Draymond.
But following the ejection, an amusing event occurred. The Orlando Magic lost their shooting sense. Although they got very close in the fourth quarter, the Warriors never let up their lead after going on a 19-2 run. In his six minutes of action, the rookie guard for the Warriors was outscored by 16 points, but Gui Santos proved why Green can’t be banned in a game like this. Trayce Jackson-Davis added 14 rebounds, while Brandin Podziemski pulled down nine.
After Green was benched for the first four games, the Warriors had not won any of them. They genuinely can’t afford to lose their defensive captain again. That does not preclude the possibility of another one in the remaining ten games.
