In the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night in New York, LeBron James matched a career high by making nine 3-pointers and tied a season high with 40 points.
Six wins in a row for the Lakers (42-33) also marked a strong comeback from their 19-point defeat in Indiana on Friday, when they were kept to 90 points.
James shot 13 of 17 from the field to record his third 40-point performance of the year. He made nine out of ten 3-pointers.
With 24 points and 14 rebounds from Anthony Davis, the ninth-place Lakers in the Western Conference pulled ahead of the Warriors by two games. On Sunday, Golden State was going up against the Spurs in San Antonio.
The Lakers shot 54.5 percent from the field and were led by Rui Hachimura, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers received 114 points from their starting lineup, led by 18 points from D’Angelo Russell and 12 from Austin Reaves.
Although Cam Thomas scored 30 points in an attempt to match James’ output, the Nets (29–46) lost their third straight game to halt their winning streak. After making 25 threes on Friday against the Chicago Bulls, the Nets shot 42.4 percent overall and 33.3 percent (12-for-36) from beyond the arc. Trendon Watford scored 15 points, and Dennis Schroder ended with 14.
With 6:04 left in the first quarter, Reaves’ layup gave the Lakers a 17-0 lead after the Nets missed their first 11 shots. With 5:39 remaining, Brooklyn scored their first basket. The Lakers then went on to lead by as many as 24 points by the end of the first quarter and led 31–11 going into the second.
Mikal Bridges’ three-pointer with 6:26 remaining in the second quarter put Brooklyn down twelve points, but the Lakers closed the half on a 20-9 surge to lead 67-44 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Los Angeles jumped out to three consecutive 26-point leads. However, the Nets rallied late in the fourth, driven by Watford’s putback and Thomas’ four-point play, cutting the advantage to 90-79.
With 7:14 remaining in the game, James made his eighth three-pointer while going out of bounds and onto the lap of a front-row supporter, giving the team a 108-91 lead. Less than a minute later, he made his ninth three-pointer, increasing the score to 111-93.
