If Mavs star Luka Doncic makes All-NBA this season, he will be able to get a supermax contract next year.
The NBA continues to generate enormous profits, and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is set to receive a large salary soon.
Mavs fans need not fear. Until someone makes a trade request, Doncic is not going anywhere anytime soon. The five-year, $215 million contract that the Slovenian player signed with the Mavericks in 2021 as a “designated rookie” is ready to begin its second season. If Doncic’s top priority is money, he should sign a new long-term contract with Dallas right away.
If Doncic is named All-NBA once again this season, he could get a five-year, $318 million supermax contract in 2025, according to ESPN’s cap expert Bobby Marks. Doncic’s contract would start with the 2026–27 season and run until 2030–31. With that supermax contract, he is anticipated to earn an enormous $83.6 million in the final year. That surpasses Stephen Curry’s salary by over $30 million, who now earns the highest in the NBA.
It seems amazing to consider that Doncic will only be 31 years old when the next decade begins. He is still in the prime of his career. The NBA is reportedly looking for a new partner that will pay it $7-8 billion year when it signs a new TV deal for 2025–2026. The pay cap will rise even further as a result.
Remember that a player’s pay is directly tied to the salary cap. Because of this, the league’s maximum wage rules keep some superstars, like Doncic, from making nearly as much money for their teams and the NBA as a whole. He’ll probably be worth a lot more than $83.6 million by 2030–31.
The question that is much more interesting? Whether Doncic will play out the last year of his supermax deal with the Mavericks or if he’ll have already moved on and secured a new deal before asking Dallas to sell him.
