Following Karl-Anthony Towns’ early-March knee injury, Minnesota is 11-5 overall and has won seven of its last nine games.

The Timberwolves, who have just once in franchise history received the top seed, are knotted with the Nuggets for the top slot in the West and hold the tiebreaker. On Wednesday, Minnesota visits Denver.

The Lakers, on a late-season surge that guaranteed them at least a spot in the play-in tournament, entered Sunday with nine wins in ten games led by Rui Hachimura with 30 points and Jaxson Hayes with 10 rebounds.

Los Angeles (45–34) lost Anthony Davis following the first quarter after the player was struck by Kyle Anderson close to his left eye while attempting a dunk, and LeBron James was sidelined due to flu-like symptoms.

For Los Angeles, Austin Reaves added 14 points, D’Angelo Russell scored 15 points and gave out 11 assists, and Spencer Dinwiddie finished with 18 points.

The Lakers led 37-33 at the end of the first quarter, but without Davis, they were outscored 46-27 in the second, falling down 79-64 at the half. In the second quarter, Minnesota shot 62.1 percent from the field and outrebounded Los Angeles 14–8.

After the half, the Lakers adjusted their strategy and used a 17-4 run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 88-81. However, the Timberwolves led 102-92 going into the fourth quarter.

After a three-point play by Reid, Minnesota embarked on a 12-2 run early in the fourth quarter, taking the lead and leading 120-100 with 5:37 left.
