Born in Athens, Greece on December 6, 1994, Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player who won a championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. The family had financial challenges and continual dread of deportation because his parents were Nigerian immigrants without legal status in Greece. Antetokounmpo and his brothers fell in love with basketball at a young age in spite of these obstacles.
At the age of eleven, Antetokounmpo started playing basketball for the Filathlitikos youth league team. Local scouts spotted his talent and potential, as he and his brothers attracted their attention. Their talents were discovered when they were just 13 years old, opening the door for them to become professional basketball players.
Antetokounmpo decided to enter the NBA Draft in 2013 at the age of 18. His professional career began when the Milwaukee Bucks selected him with the 15th overall pick in the draft. Despite a sluggish beginning, Antetokounmpo’s influence on the floor increased in the 2015–2016 campaign.
Antetokounmpo proved his mettle early on in the NBA, establishing himself as a superb player thanks to his commitment and hard work. He was named the league MVP and went on to become an All-Star player four times in a row. He also won the NBA Most Improved Player title and was selected to the All-NBA teams.
Antetokounmpo and the Bucks had poor playoff results in prior seasons despite their individual accomplishments. They did, however, overcome series deficits to advance to the NBA finals in the 2020–2021 campaign.
