Nike launched its first signature shoe and apparel of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo on June 29.
A look at the Nike Air Zoom Freak 1.
In his signature short, Antetokounmpo’s primary logo “becomes fodder for an elegant, emotive trim that channels the most exuberant of European luxury sportswear,” Nike says. His tank shirt uses the primary logo “as an emboss motif across the back.” The Greek flag “34” is used to punctuate the pockets of his track jacket.
The design of the shoe and apparel represents his family’s path from Nigeria to Greece, and then from Athens to Milwaukee.
Antetokounmpo first started having meetings with Nike about the design of his first signature shoe in November 2017.
The shoe features double-stacked Zoom Air units under the heel, designed to offer a balance of responsiveness and cushioning.
“I AM MY FATHER’S LEGACY” is molded into the outsole.
The shoe features the Antetokounmpo primary logo, an interlocked “G” and “A” that gives hierarchical privilege to the family name.
The rubber clip that runs from the outsole up to the midsole of the shoe was intended to provide lateral stability.
The first basketball player from outside of the United States to have a signature sneaker with Nike is Antetokounmpo.
