Luka Dončić is a big reason why the Dallas Mavericks are going to their second Western Conference finals.
It took six games, but the Slovenian star led his team to a 17-point comeback that beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 117–116 on Saturday. They beat the top seed in the Western Conference. On Sunday, Dallas will play the winner of Game 7 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets.
At the end of the game, Dončić had 29 points (9 of 15 shooting), 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. It was his seventh career playoff triple-double and third in a row. Derrick Jones Jr. and Kyrie Irving were also very important. Jones Jr. scored 22 points on 8 of 13 shots and Irving scored 22 points on 9 of 23 shots.
Even though he wasn’t very good, Irving improved his record in close games to 14-0, which is the best record in NBA history.
The Thunder were ahead for most of the game. They were up 16 points at halftime thanks to a run in the late second quarter. Early in the third, the lead was 77–60. The Mavericks kept working hard for most of the second half and tied the game in the middle of the fourth quarter. From there, there were five lead changes in the last five minutes.
The game came down to a disputed call in the end. Three seconds left and the score was 116–115. P.J. Washington tried to make a 3-pointer that would have won it, but Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander fouled him. The Thunder argued that there was a foul.
On replays, it was clear that Gilgeous-Alexander had a clean hand on the ball when he hit Washington in the arm. Touching the shooter’s arm and then the ball usually doesn’t mean the play was a foul. But the officials said the ball contact wasn’t on the release of the shot because Washington took the contact and then let go of the ball.
