Kyrie Irving scored thirty points, Luka Dončić scored thirty, and the Dallas Mavericks led 1-0 following a thrilling first game.
Riding their customary offensive motors, the Mavericks won 108-105 on Wednesday to open the Western Conference finals in front of a boisterous Target Center crowd, stealing home-court advantage.
Irving went 12-of-23 with four assists while Dončić was 12-of-25 with eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Anthony Edwards, who groaned and toiled his way to 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting, had a comparatively bad day, but he still contributed 11 rebounds and assists.
Minnesota led the game for the most of the first three quarters, but Dallas rallied in the fourth to take an eight-point lead with a 13-0 run. That quickly dissipated thanks to a Timberwolves run of 12-1, which included a 3-pointer by Karl-Anthony Towns from well out.
The call that followed the Mavericks regaining the lead was one of the most important ones. Towns surged in after a missed three-pointer and appeared to make a putback dunk that tied the game. Calling offensive goaltending, the officials waved off the basket. A review and prompt confirmation of the choice followed, but some supporters were dubious after seeing the replay.
Dončić added another basket with a minute remaining and the Mavericks were ahead 104-102. The remainder of the game saw Minnesota without a chance to tie it.
