The National Basketball Association (NBA) standout Giannis Antetokounmpo shares a similar love for the beautiful game with many other European basketball players.
The film “Rise,” which will be released in June 2022, was inspired by the life of the Milwaukee Bucks forward and his brothers, who are Greek and Nigerian.
Just a few months before the 2013 NBA Draft, he became a Greek citizen, changing his family name from Adetokunbo to Antetokounmpo and earning the moniker “Greek Freak” in the process.
Antetokounmpo’s father, Charles, was a football player. In March 2023, Antetokounmpo joined his siblings Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex in the Nashville SC ownership group.
“If I wasn’t a basketball player, I would be a soccer player for sure,” the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (2019, 2022) said to reporters.

In addition to supporting Arsenal, Antetokounmpo said he was impressed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s time at Paris Saint-Germain.
I used to watch a lot of football when I was little. My dad was a football player, and the game was our life. I started playing basketball at thirteen.
“Arsenal was my favourite team and Thierry Henry was my favourite player once.” I like Arsenal, but when Zlatan Ibrahimovic played for PSG, I had fun there. “Deep down, I’m still an Arsenal fan,” he was quoted as saying in an Arsenal video.
In answer to a question provided to supporters by the UEFA Champions League Twitter account, which included the Arsenal crest and inquired as to which player first sprang to mind, Antetokounmpo recently tweeted his continued support for Henry. “Thierry Henry,” was his response.
