Discover more about Antetokounmpos.
The Nigerian-Greek twins moved to the United States from Greece, but they never gave up on their goal of playing in the NBA.
Giannis, Kostas, Alex, and Thomasis were the three players chosen, and they all went on to win NBA Championships and make history. (Kostas in 2020, Giannis, Thanasis, and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021; Kostas with the Los Angeles Lakers).
The Antetokounmpo brothers, the sons of Charles and Veronica, grew up in Athens, Greece; however, Francis, the oldest, was born in Nigeria before his parents left. Francis was a professional football player who also died in 2017—like his father.
Both athletes and spectators have been motivated by Antetokounmpo’s accomplishment. Their narrative was told in the Disney+ video Rise from 2022. Their journey to achievement is exciting, but their brotherly bond is beautiful.
Their brotherly relationship is evident on their YouTube channel, AntetokounBrosTV, when they’re not supporting one another in interviews. Additionally, they support impoverished communities through AntetokounBros Academy.
Giannis, Thanasis, and Alex will compete in the Skills Challenge at the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend with Team Jazz and Team Rookies.
Meanwhile, get to know the five Antetokounmpo brothers.
Kostas Antetokounmpo
Born in Athens on November 20, 1997, Kostas is the second youngest brother of Antetokounmpo. His parents are Charles and Veronica.
He played two years of high school basketball in Greece before enrolling in Wisconsin’s Dominican High School, where as a senior he was selected to the First Team Division 4 All-State. Kostas is an athlete at the University of Dayton.
After being chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the draft, Kostas was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2018. In 2019, he joined the Lakers.
Kostas made NBA history in 2020. Following the Lakers’ victory over the Miami Heat in the NBA championship series, Kostas became the first player of Greek heritage to win an NBA championship. His older brothers Giannis and Thanasis followed suit in 2021.
Kostas is a professional player who plays for Fenerbahçe Beko. previously of the French basketball team LDLC ASVEL and the Chicago Bulls.
Kostas and his siblings founded the AntetokounBros Academy, a “dream come true for underprivileged youth,” in addition to playing basketball. On its website, this Greek enterprise claims to provide scholarships for access to athletics, doors, and inspiration through education.
Alex Antetokounmpo
The youngest Antetokounmpo brother, Alex, was born in Athens, Georgia, on August 27, 2001, to Charles and Veronica. Similar to his three elder siblings, Alex plays basketball professionally.
After graduating from Dominican High School in Wisconsin, he decided against going to college and instead went to play basketball overseas. “I am confident that my decision to play in Europe is the best one,” he said to Bleacher Report. It will aid in my best preparation. If I decide to continue, I’ll be ready for the NBA.
In 2021, Alex left UCAM Murcia to play in the NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings. He joined Raptors 905, the Toronto Raptors’ NBA G League affiliate, in October 2021. He took part in the 2022 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge with Giannis and Thanasis.
Along with his older siblings Giannis and Thanasis, Alex was traded to the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League franchise, in July of 2022. Despite being new to the league, Alex is grateful for their support.
In 2019, Giannis said, “I definitely think Alex can be better than me,” to Bleacher Report. “He never gives up.” wants something like this. That’s what sets him apart. He is not content.
Like his brothers, Alex values family highly. He told ESPN that honouring their father is “the biggest thing we’ve got to worry about” and that “IF we have one goal to fulfil in life, it’s that.”
Francis Antetokounmpo
Born in Lagos, Nigeria on October 20, 1988, Francis is the oldest of the five Antetokounmpo brothers. His parents are Charles and Veronica. Charles and his spouse went to Greece when he gave up playing football professionally.
After his parents went to Athens, Francis was reared in Lagos with his grandparents (albeit he currently stays in Greece). Like his siblings, he is a talented athlete.
The only difference? Like his father Charles, he was a professional football player rather than a basketball player. Francis played in leagues in Nigeria and Greece prior to retiring.
Francis is musical in addition to being athletic. Under his middle name, Ofili, he released his debut single, “Shekosi,” along with a music video in 2020.
Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Charles and Veronica welcomed their second son, Thanasis, into the world on July 18, 1992, in Athens. He is a professional basketball player, just like his younger brothers.
In 2008, Thanasis joined the youth teams of Filathlitikos, and later on, he played semi-professionally for the senior teams.
He played Greek minor leagues with Filathlitikos before starting his professional career in 2012. He played four games in the Greek third tier before being selected ninth overall in the 2013 NBA Development League by the Delaware 87ers. In 2014, the Westchester Knicks acquired him.
Thanasis joined his brother Giannis on the Milwaukee Bucks in 2019 after two years with EuroLeague powerhouse Panathinaikos. Along with Giannis and Kostas, he helped the team overcome the Phoenix Suns and win the NBA Finals in 2021, becoming the first trio of brothers to do it.
Beyond basketball, Thanasis loves fashion and has been in GQ multiple times. His sports include golf. When not working out, he hosts Thanalysis, his podcast.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo gave birth to five brothers, Giannis being the middle one, on December 6, 1994 in Athens. Like his three siblings, Giannis excels in basketball.
The Milwaukee Bucks selected Giannis, dubbed the “Greek Freak” by supporters, with the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft after he revealed to GQ that he “was selling stuff in the street” in Greece six months prior. “Mom went shopping. I helped her once. I did this, but no one is aware of it.
Even though Giannis was well-known when he joined the league, fame didn’t follow. His awards include NBA champion in 2021, MVP in 2019 and 2020, defensive player of the year in 2020, and most improved player in 2017.
“Nobody saw me the way I am today,” he said to the publication that named him “Athlete of the Year” for his championship campaign. You know why it went unnoticed? I was blind to it. Ask my mother. Nope. I had a better idea of you as an NBA player. Not the person you are now.
Giannis and his fiancée, Mariah Riddlesprigger, have two children together. The first son they had, Liam Charles, was born on February 11, 2020. Their second child, Maverick Shai, was born in September 2021.
In May 2023, the couple shared a picture of their third child on Instagram. In a joint post, Riddlespringger and Antetokounmpo said, “Our dreams becoming reality 🤍.” Four months later, the girl’s pregnancy was declared.
At Giannis’ games, Liam and Mariah frequently support him. In July 2021, Liam attended his father’s NBA title victory. Maverick is featured on Giannis’ social media posts, yet he leads a private existence.
