On February 19, a full-length documentary about the Nigerian Milwaukee Bucks player’s journey from Athens, Greece, to NBA champion will debut on Prime Video.
The Hollywood Reporter – Giannis Antetokounmpo Doc ‘The Marvellous Journey’ Gets a Trailer
In the teaser for his upcoming documentary, Giannis: The Marvellous Journey, which will be available on Prime Video on Wednesday, Giannis Antetokounmpo states, “I play basketball because I wanted to change my family’s life. I don’t play for the money or the fame.”
Antetokounmpo, a rookie for the Bucks, has an escape in the NBA.
The full-length documentary, which will be available on February 19, tells the tale of Giannis’s family starting with his parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, who left Nigeria in 1991 to bring their family to Greece in quest of a better life.
Giannis, who was born in Athens on December 6, 1994, would make a decision along these lines when he declared his candidature for the 2013 NBA draft. He joined the Milwaukee Bucks on July 30, 2013, and he has played for the team his whole professional career, helping them win their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021.
The Marvellous Journey, however, goes beyond the power forward’s professional highlight reel to depict an athlete of unfathomable resiliency, from overcoming racism as an African immigrant growing up in Greece to moving his family to the United States in 2014 and dealing with his father’s untimely death in 2017.
In the trailer, Giannis expresses his feelings at the moment of his father’s passing, saying, “I don’t want to play no more.” “I want to stop playing.”
The documentary includes commentary by Giannis Antetokounmpo, also referred to as “the Greek Freak” because of his nickname, as well as appearances by his mother, Veronica, siblings Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, and fiancée Mariah Riddlesprigger.
Other NBA players including Jason Kidd, Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, Vin Baker, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson also make appearances in the film.
Previous projects indicate that the Hollywood adaptation of Giannis’ narrative has been told previously. Disney released the biographical sports drama Rise in 2022, which was based on the real-life experiences of the MVP and his brothers Thanasis and Kostas.
Giannis: The Marvellous Journey is directed and produced by Emmy Award winner Kristen Lappas. Executive producers Aaron Cohen, Libby Geist, Nick Monroe, and Giorgos Panou are working on the project in addition to Connor Schell and Hannah Beir.
