The 33-year-old has signed a one-year contract including the option of a further 12 months with Fiorentina later this afternoon.

His most recent competitive match was the 2023 FA Cup final, in which the Red Devils were defeated by Manchester City, more than 400 days ago.

Pietro Terracciano was the first-choice custodian for Fiorentina last season, having made 53 appearances in all competitions and maintained 13 clean sheets.

The contract of the 34-year-old is scheduled to expire in 2025.

De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and made 545 appearances during his 12-year tenure at the club.

He achieved the greatest number of appearances for a custodian and surpassed Peter Schmeichal’s all-time United record for clean sheets during his tenure at the club.

During his tenure in Manchester, the Spaniard was awarded five significant trophies, including the FA Cup in 2016, the Europa League in 2017, and the Premier League title in 2013.

Additionally, the shot-stopper earned numerous individual accolades, such as the Premier League Golden Glove in both the 2017-18 and 2022-23 league seasons.

Furthermore, he was recognised as Manchester United’s Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2016.

He has earned 45 appearances for Spain and last competed in 2020.

Fiorentina advanced to the Europa Conference League final for the second consecutive season and finished eighth in Serie A; however, Olympiacos emerged victorious.

The new campaign commences when they face Parma on August 17.
