Declan Rice, an Arsenal player, was dismissed against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Declan Rice, an Arsenal player, has discussed his contentious red card against Brighton and Hove Albion in public.
The Gunners’ successful start to the 24/25 Premier League season came to an end on Saturday afternoon at the Emirates Stadium as they drew 1-1 with Brighton.
Mikel Arteta’s team led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a magnificent goal from Kai Havertz, and they were well on their way to taking all three points.
But, Rice’s second yellow card for kicking the ball away in the second half quickly altered the course of the game.
It should come as no surprise that manager Arteta and Gunners supporters disagreed with Chris Kavanagh’s choice.
Arteta called again and expressed his “amazement” at the call, questioning the “inconsistency” of the referee’s actions.
Following the game, Rice acknowledged that the choice was tough but ultimately the right one.
“I was shocked,” he remarked. You might probably tell I was stunned by my expression. I haven’t run behind Veltman and smashed the ball out of the way. I used the outside of my foot to make contact with the ball.
“Observe, this is the game’s law. After my challenge in the first half, which I completely agree was a 50-50 that I didn’t win, if you touch the ball away, even little, it’s certainly a red card. However, Brighton can’t really go any farther after that second half, especially because it’s in the corner flag.
Rice went on, “It was harsh and difficult, but that’s just life.” I have to put it behind me. I will be stronger as a result, and I can only thank the players for going above and beyond for me, the manager (Arteta) for pushing everyone, and the supporters who once again showed incredible support this afternoon. That is my perspective.
“That’s my first sending-off in my career, so I just wanted to apologise to my team-mates, which I’ve done, and to the fans.”
