This week, Tata Martino quit as manager of Inter Miami. Javier Mascherano is now set to take over from the former FC Barcelona coach.
Since he stopped playing, the Argentina U-23 boss has made a name for himself with the national team. Mascherano used to play with Lionel Messi for both club and country in the mid-2010s.
Not making it to the play-offs at all means that Mascherano will have to go all the way in the MLS Cup next year. This will be an even bigger challenge for him since Inter Miami is his first time leading a club.
But Mascherano already has an idea for a big player that Inter Miami should sign next year.
Mascherano wants Angel Di Maria to play for Inter Miami.
El Crack Deportivo reports that Mascherano has eyed Angel Di Maria as a possible signing for Inter Miami. The Benfica attacker is a former teammate of Messi and the new Herons boss on the international level.
Di Maria, a 36-year-old forward who used to play for Real Madrid, was linked with Inter Miami earlier this year before he signed a new deal with Benfica. However, rumors of a move to MLS or Florida have continued.
And Mascherano is going to be the new manager at Chase Stadium. There’s a good chance that the new manager of Inter Miami could use his power in Argentine football to get Di Maria to join the Supporters’ Shield winners.
Messi and Di Maria were two of the most important players in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup win in Qatar. Seeing them play together again in Florida would be quite the show, especially since Luis Suarez is set to stay for another year.
Di Maria’s signing would make up for not getting Neymar.
Some Inter Miami fans weren’t expecting Neymar to choose Santos over Inter Miami because they thought it would be so cool for the Brazilian to play with Messi and Suarez again in Major League Soccer.
But now that Di Maria is back on the table for Inter Miami, the Herons could make up for losing out on Neymar by signing the 36-year-old winger. The Argentine attacker is a great player who would be a big hit at Chase Stadium.
Also, Di Maria playing with Messi at the club level could make Inter Miami’s team perfect to win the MLS title, especially since the record-setting Supporters’ Shield winners had such a bad end to the season.
