The Denver Nuggets have found their rhythm in recent weeks, with Russell Westbrook stepping up during this stretch. On New Year’s Day, Westbrook delivered another standout performance as he filled in for the injured Aaron Gordon, recording 16 points and 11 assists in the Nuggets’ commanding 139-120 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
This win marks Denver’s 19th of the season out of 32 games, placing them fourth in the crowded Western Conference standings. Despite concerns about their depth, the Nuggets have managed to persevere. Westbrook’s contributions only further highlight the brilliance of three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, who nearly achieved a triple-double by halftime and finished the game with 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 15 assists.
Speaking to Vic Lombardi of Altitude Sports after the game, Westbrook emphasized his commitment to supporting the team and making life easier for Jokic on the court.
“He’s the best player in the world. My role is to simplify the game for him, and he does the same for everyone else. It’s an honor to share the floor with him,” Westbrook stated, per Joel Rush of Forbes Sports.
Since entering the starting lineup, Westbrook has consistently created easier scoring opportunities for Jokic, reflected in his impressive assist totals. The 2017 NBA MVP seems rejuvenated in Denver, proving to be a vital asset to the Nuggets with each game.
